The first good thing to eat appeared in my garden like everything else this year: very unexpectedly.
Last week, I was back in town after a few days away. My garden had exploded. I was taking a tour and admiring everything when I noticed 6-7 overgrown asparagus spears against the back fence. I’ve been trying to grow asparagus for the last 4 years and had long ceased to hope for some tasty springs. Since I hadn’t looked, I’d completely missed them, and now they were way past their prime.
There was a single spear that was salvageable, so I snapped it off and ate it right there.
It tasted like spring.
